She couldn’t figure it out. Why was this creature still chasing her? She thought that she had killed it with the last stab to the heart but somehow it kept running. She spun around on her heel taking the creature by surprise and stabbed it through the heart again. This slowed him down but it did not stop him, in fact he paused just long enough to take a breath or so it seemed, he then resumed chasing her.

Buffy: Don’t you know how to stay dead?

She asked the demon in exasperation. Of course he didn’t answer her and kept chasing her mercilessly through the cemetery. Buffy headed for the nearest crypt.

Buffy: That would be perfect, very fitting

She commented on the fact that the nearest crypt belonged to Spike. That being the case it would fit quite well with the fact that she was having a very crappy evening.

She opened the door as quietly as she could so as hopefully not alert him that she was there. Luckily for her the crypt was empty. Feeling an odd sense of disappointment Buffy shrugged and turned to watch the demon.

Spike had seen her enter his crypt, he was actually just about to re-enter it himself when she barged in, though oddly carefully, as if she didn’t want to disturb him. Funny little bint he thought to himself. Unfortunately he had left his smokes on the side table and was desperate to get them, so her little game of hide and seek was about to end. He purposefully strode toward the door only to be knocked down from behind by an incredibly large human. At least it looked human but it somehow had the strength of a demon, and it definitely had the intelligence of a demon.

While Spike was pondering his discoveries, Buffy had snuck up on them and lunged at the demon driving a sword she had found in Spike’s crypt through its middle. She then pulled it upwards toward its head and twisted leaving a gaping wound, through which it could be seen that the creature was in fact human.

If Spike had any breath he would have held it as he saw the sword come flying through the middle of the monsters stomach. He coward away as it moved forward and shut his eyes in anticipation of the pain that was sure to follow. However the pain didn’t come but the monster did fall away from his body. Slowly he opened his eyes and looked into those of his rescuer.

Spike: Oh, bloody hell, what are you doing here? I could have saved myself you know. Didn’t need you waltzing in here saving me.

Buffy just smirked at the annoyed vampire.

Buffy: No, I could see that you were doing quite well all by yourself. What were you gonna do? Let him strangle you till he died of exhaustion?

She smirked again

Suddenly the demon, which Buffy had thought that she had killed, was upon them again.

Buffy: What the….

Just as suddenly Spike turned, yanked the sword away from Buffy and ran it through the demon’s head. Effectively cutting it in two. He grinned slightly at the damage he had caused and thought to himself what a good thing it was that the chip in his head didn’t stop him from killing demons.

Buffy: How did you…..??? I killed that like 10 times already. The damned thing wouldn’t stay dead and now you just turn around and steal -my- sword and kill it?? Well that is just plain rude.

Spike smirked again

Spike: well, you obviously were doin’ something wrong. Anyway, whose sword was it in the first place?

He waggled his eyebrow at her. This just infuriated her more.

Buffy: Get out of here Spike. Before I stake you as well.

Spike: Are you sure you remember where it is you have to stake?

Buffy: Just get out of my way.

Spike: Sure thing Cutie, whatever you say.

Buffy stormed off angrily. Who did he think he was? She was no little kid needing protecting. She could patrol with out his help, or his waggling eyebrows. Damned vampire, if he hadn’t helped her out so much lately she would stake the bastard. Still the point was he had helped her, and she couldn’t kill a semi-defenceless creature, even if he was evil.

Buffy knocked on the door quietly; she hated doing this, having to wake him up in the middle of the night. But well, it had to be done. Something just wasn’t right about that demon.

Buffy (yelling through the door): Giles, Giles, are you in there??

Giles (yawning): Yes, Yes I am coming.

Buffy sighed; she was in for a lecture she could hear it in the tone of his voice. Even through the solid wood door.

Giles (opening the door): Buffy, what is it? Is there a need for all this yelling and waking me up at 2 am? Well, of course there is (off her glare) but... well, do come in.

Buffy entered and sat down on the couch before she spoke.

Buffy: how many times in a row can you kill the same demon?

Giles: What? This isn’t the time for games Buffy; it’s a very important day at the magic shop tomorrow and……

Buffy: Answer me! How many times?

Giles: Well my answer to that would have to be once. Yes, generally it only takes one time to kill a demon. Why?

Buffy: It’s just that tonight on patrol, I came across this demon that looked mostly human, it acted human and had very human strength and speed. But I killed it like 10 times, or maybe a hundred, I lost count. But the point is that it wouldn’t die, I damn near ripped the thing in two.

Giles: Is it still alive?

Buffy: No, Spike killed it.

Giles: Spike?

Buffy: I was having all this great fun -not- killing this demon and then Spike just went whoosh, and chopped its head in two and killed it.

Giles: Well, that’s it then. Its head had to be severed.

Buffy: No I don’t think so, it was more than that. I think it had something to do with Spike. Can you check it out for me?

Giles: Yes, yes but can I do it in the morning? Because I am afraid my research abilities are better when the sun is shining.

Buffy (sighing): OK, just promise me.

Giles: I promise, now go home and sleep

Buffy was lying in her bed sleeping peacefully, he could see her perfectly from the garden bed in which he stood. He could see her delicate shoulders above the blankets and sheets while her head lay on the white pillow, her hair splayed across it like silk.

He mentally shook himself. He shouldn’t be thinking like this. She was his mortal enemy. He couldn’t be attracted to her, be in -love- with her. Again he shook himself. It didn’t help. He was smitten. He was in love with the Slayer.

Buffy woke the next morning with a feeling of calm over her, she felt like she had been protected during the night. She had felt like that a lot lately. She couldn’t figure it out. One night she would have to stay up and try and see what made her feel like that.

Buffy: Giles, did you figure it out?

Buffy called as she entered the Magic Box. She walked in to a chorus of hello’s coming mostly from her friends Xander, Willow and Tara. She only managed to rate a grunt on Anya’s scale and Dawn didn’t say anything at all.

Buffy: Giles?? Giles??

Giles: Yes, Yes I am coming, not quite as fast as I used to be.

Buffy: Sorry

Giles: So tell me again. This demon that was mostly human couldn’t be killed by you but Spike killed it without problems?

Buffy: Repeato much…??

Giles: Just making sure. I have yet to find something that makes sense to me; however I am guessing that these creatures, because of their human appearance can’t be killed by humans.

Buffy: Huh?

Xander: To kill them you have to be one of them… or a demon at least.

Willow: Yeah that is why Spike could do it and you couldn’t.

Buffy: Okay, when Xander gets it and I don’t, it’s time to worry.

Xander: Such is life.

Buffy: What?

Xander: You know what? I don’t know.

Buffy gives Xander a you are so dumb look.

Buffy: Ok, so I have to find a way to kill these things then, Giles any suggestions?

Giles: Well, and believe me I hate this, I think you should take Spike patrolling with you.

All: WHAT? SPIKE?

Giles: (sighs) Yes he is the only defence we know of at the moment so he is our best chance until I can figure this out better.

Buffy: (sighs): Well I guess I’d better go and have a chat to our resident vampire.

Night – Spike’s Crypt

Spike: You want me to do what for you Slayer?

Buffy: Spike don’t make this any harder on me.

Spike: Just say it once more for me…. C’mon…

Buffy: Spike I need you to help me patrol till Giles can figure out another way to kill these humanoid demon things…. Good enough?

Spike: Now beg.

Spike waggles his eyebrows and smirks

Buffy: Spike you are a pig and I don’t need your help. I will just make sure that I don’t come across any.

Buffy storms out of Spike’s crypt slamming the door behind her as she goes.

Spike: Buffy, pet, don’t be like that. I’ll help you, I was just messing.

Buffy: No Spike. I will not accept your help because I don’t need it. And I am going patrolling and if you follow me I WILL stake you. Believe me when I say that.

Spike: (grinning): Ok Slayer, just don’t expect to hide in my crypt tonight from your little humanoid demons.

Buffy: You knew about that?

Spike: I know everything.

Buffy: Fuck off Spike.

Off in the distance a faint sound of a police siren can be heard. Both Spike and Buffy turn their heads in the direction it is coming from. Suddenly it came screeching around the corner heading for Buffy’s street. A wave of panic and fear swept through Buffy’s body. This can’t be good, she thought to herself.

Buffy (screams): DAWN

Buffy took of running, following behind the police car.

End of part 1.
